On February 9, 2012, NAMI Mercer will begin its spring semester of “Family-to-Family,” a free, 12-week education course for adult family members of persons living with mental illness. The course is recognized as an evidence-based practice that improves the ability of family members to provide support and to maintain hope as caregivers of a family member with serious mental illness.
The course covers the biology of brain disorders; diagnostic criteria for the major mental illnesses, including schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder (manic-depression), panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post traumatic stress disorder and borderline personality disorder.
The curriculum was designed by NAMI mental-health professionals and is taught by trained volunteers who have experienced mental illness in their own families.
