Merwick Care & Rehabilitation Center Opening in Plainsboro This Fall

The new Merwick Care & Rehabilitation Center opening in Plainsboro this fall will combine Merwick’s long-standing reputation for first-rate care with a unique facility being built by owners Windsor Healthcare, a family-owned company that owns short-term rehabilitation and long-term comprehensive, skilled nursing facilities in New Jersey.

Incorporating state-of-the-art design with green construction and operational elements, the new Merwick center will offer 200 beds, more than doubling the capacity of the downtown Princeton facility it is replacing. Construction is on schedule for an opening in September.

“By combining Merwick’s long-standing reputation for excellent quality of care with a structure and setting that are second to none, we are about to open a premier short-term rehabilitation and long-term care facility,” said Hyman Jacobs, president of Windsor Healthcare. “Everything about the new Merwick – from its cutting edge design to its seasoned staff to its park-like setting – will make it the facility of choice for those seeking rehabilitative or long-term care.”

The relocation of Merwick will precede the University Medical Center at Princeton’s move to a site just off Route 1 at Plainsboro Road, across the street from the new Merwick. The natural setting, which overlooks the Millstone River and will be surrounded by greenspace that includes a 32-acre public park, will combine with the unique architecture to make the Merwick Care & Rehabilitation Center truly one-of-a-kind.

Merwick at the Park’s concierge service will address individual patient and resident needs, whether that means arranging for delivery of a specific newspaper, setting up visits to a mall, finding local activities or arranging accommodations for a family visitor. The new facility will continue Merwick’s tradition of providing high-quality care and a range of services, including skilled nursing, recreation program, respite care, hospice care, pain management and palliative care.

Existing buildings on Plainsboro Road between Route 1 and Merwick will be torn down this summer to create a new public park. The 32-acre park is being built by Princeton HealthCare System, with the hospital, Merwick and other facilities that will be located in the health care campus contributing to the construction. The park will feature bike and walking paths, gazebos, benches and will offer views to the adjacent Millstone River.

In addition to access by car off Route 1, Merwick at the Park will be accessible by Middlesex County Area Transit’s new M6 shuttle bus service, connecting Plainsboro with Cranbury and Jamesburg, as well as NJTransit bus service from Trenton.

For patients recovering from an illness or surgery, Merwick can serve as a bridge between hospital and home, a place for them to prepare to return to their lives. Whether recuperating from surgery or learning how to resume normal activities with a hip or knee replacement, the 80-bed sub-acute rehabilitation wing – The Luxor Pavilion at Merwick – will provide the level of rehabilitative care designed to safely and quickly get patients back home.

The Luxor Pavilion will feature a 3,500-square-foot gym behind a two-story wall of glass, where orthopedic patients can work to rebuild their strength and stamina. The new center will also feature a 12-station dialysis center for both inpatient and outpatient treatment.

For the long-term care wing, with 120 beds, Windsor Healthcare embraces the philosophy that the later stages of life should be treated as just that – new stages that can be rewarding and fulfilling while also being safe and comfortable. Windsor Healthcare believes all decisions should revolve around the resident’s preferences. Residents of Windsor Healthcare facilities are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.

Merwick Care Center has decades of experience providing care and support for those who need help with the activities of their daily lives. The exceptional quality of life and care Merwick provides has led to commendations from residents, their families and physicians in the community. That will continue at the new Merwick Care & Rehabilitation Center.
