According to the National Stroke Association, 795,000 strokes will
occur in the United States. A stroke is considered a “brain attack”
that cuts off vital blood flow and oxygen to the brain. A stroke can
occur to anyone regardless of their age, race or gender. The chances of
having a stroke increase if a person has certain risk factors such as
high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation, high cholesterol, diabetes,
smoking, alcohol consumption, physical inactivity and obesity.
The good news is that nearly 80% of strokes can be prevented, and the best way to
protect yourself is to understand your personal risk and how to manage
it. Hunterdon Medical Center will be offering a Vascular Screening &
Stroke Awareness Fair on Saturday, May 22nd from 8 a.m. – 11 a.m. at
Hunterdon Medical Center.
The Know Your Numbers…Know Your Risk Cardiovascular Risk Assessment

stroke and will include fasting lipid and glucose test, blood pressure,
body mass index and a risk factor analysis for heart disease and stroke.
The fee for the lab test is $25.
A carotid ultrasound screening will also be available for at risk

– 2:00 p.m. and the fee for this test is $80.
In addition, a physician panel of experts will address signs and
symptoms of stroke, risk factors, rehabilitation, carotid stenting and
